Cool Boxes for Camping
If you’re a keen camper, you know how vital it is to have gear that’s just as resilient and adventurous as you are. Whether you’re off on a weekend in the wilderness or a longer journey, you’re going to need a hefty supply of rations and fluid to sustain your trip, and that means you’ll need a sturdy camping cool box for it all to stay chill.
Our collection of cool boxes offers a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit any and every camper.
Whether you’re on the lookout for something compact, a cooler on wheels, a super large-capacity cool box or otherwise, our camping cool boxes are built to brave the wild and take on any adventure.
Versatile Camping Cool Boxes & Bags
Campers need a versatile, reliable cool box that won’t slow them down as they dive deep into the wild. You might not have easy access to extra ice when you’re out in the sticks, so you want a cool box that can keep everything cool for longer, and one that can handle any conditions and withstand rougher terrains. Seasoned campers know how to pack light, and the last thing you want is a clunky cool box slowing you down.
Our Roadie® and Tundra® hard cool boxes for camping fit the bill, offering complete versatility in a lightweight, easy-to-handle unit. Tundra® cool boxes can double as a tabletop for fireside dinners or a seat – we’ve even got seat cushions designed to fit perfectly atop our camping cool boxes. That means you can save a bit of space on camping furniture.
Meanwhile, our Roadie® small cool boxes are perfect for campers who won’t need a huge capacity. It’s worth noting that coolers will stay cooler for longer the more packed they are – so you might find it better to go for a smaller cool box that you can pack tightly over a large cool box that’ll leave a lot of space open – and the Roadie® is the top choice.
Different Shape & Size Camping Cool Boxes
No matter how big or small your group, how long your trip, or how much food and drink you’re taking with you, you’ll find the camping cool box for you across YETI’s wide collection. We’ve got camping cool boxes in a range of shapes and sizes to suit any and every camper.
Explore large-capacity camping cool boxes like our Tundra® 350, which can hold around 222 cans at a 2:1 ice-to-content ratio. For light-packers, go for the Roadie® 24. This compact cool box is super easy to handle while still offering plenty of space for tipples and treats. Our Silo 22.7 L water cooler is the perfect, hardworking hydration station for campers; it doesn’t just keep water cold, it can keep your hot drinks hot too.
How to Pack a Cooler
To get the most out of your YETI cool box, you need to know how best to pack it. Check out our tips on how to pack a cooler:
- Preload your cool box with ice a few hours before use or store it in a cold place before packing it
- Go for a 2:1 ice-to-contents ratio – that’s one-third of your cooler for food and drink, two-thirds for ice
- Use low-temperature ice – below freezing point – it’s drier and will last way longer. Use a mix of ice cubes and block ice; ice cubes are great for your chilling your food and drink faster, while block ice keeps it cooler for longer
- Try to pack your cool box as full as possible. If you need to leave space in your cooler, they are best filled with extra ice, towels, or crumpled newspaper if weight is a concern. Don’t drain the water when your cool box is in use – it helps to insulate the ice that’s still there
- Ice can last twice as long in the shade – so keep your cool box out of direct sunlight as much as possible
- The more you open the cool box, the quicker the ice will melt. Limit access to the cool box as much as possible
- When used in conjunction with a YETI Hard Cooler, dry ice can keep food and drinks cold and frozen longer than regular ice.
- Extend your regular ice with YETI ICE. YETI ICE is dialled into a temperature just below that of regular ice, letting it do all the cooling work to keep your regular ice from melting.
Camping Coolers for Food, Drink and other Items
Our cool boxes are built to last, and built to keep your food and drink chilled and fresh no matter where your journey takes you. So long as you’re using the right ice, packing your cooler correctly, and keeping it shut and in the shade as much as you can, whatever you’re packing will stay cool for the long run. Frozen meals, fruit and veg, or even beer and wine – curate your ultimate camping menu without worrying about what will or won’t last.
The rotomolded, Fatwall™ design of our Tundra® cool boxes makes them all the more durable while boosting the insulation inside. Anchorpoint™ tie-down slots, T-Rex™ lid latches and our Neverfail™ hinge system are just a few of the features that help keep everything safe and secure, making these the most resilient coolers you can find. Meanwhile, Bearfoot™ non-slip feet and Doublehaul™ handles make handling your camping cooler easy.
What are passive cool boxes?
Passive cool boxes work using ice and insulation to subside a process called convection. The insulation within a cool box is usually made from sturdy plastic or foam, and this is used to block warm air from getting in. Convection is when heat travels around an enclosed space and as a result, temperatures rise. No matter how cool your cooler may be, convection is still bound to occur at some point. Every time you open the cool box, you’re letting warm air in, which will then circulate around the box and lift the temperature in turn. The insulation of a cool box is what’s used to slow down the rate of convection, so that everything can stay cooler for longer.
The insulation also works to prevent the process of conduction, where heat spreads from one object to its neighbouring objects.
Meanwhile, the ice inside the cooler works to keep temperatures low. Essentially, the more ice you have in your cooler, the lower the temperature inside will be, but of course this means having to work out how much space should be reserved for ice and how much for your actual food and drink. How long the ice lasts in your passive cool box will depend on the type of ice you’re using; while ice cubes won’t get you further than a couple days, a larger block of ice could keep everything cool for up to a week.
